De Resíduo a Pó: Processo de Reciclagem de Tubos de PVC Explicado
Why PVC Pipe Recycling Matters
PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is one of the most widely used thermoplastics globally, with pipes and profiles accounting for a significant share of consumption. According to industry data, the global PVC market exceeded 45 million metric tons in 2024, with pipes and fittings representing approximately 40% of total demand. Recycling PVC production waste and post-consumer pipes reduces raw material costs by 30-50% while diverting material from landfills.
Stage 1: Collection and Sorting
The recycling process begins with collecting PVC waste from three primary sources:
- Post-industrial waste: Off-cuts, edge trim, startup scrap, and reject pipes from extrusion lines. This is the cleanest and most valuable feedstock.
- Post-consumer waste: Used pipes, fittings, window profiles, and skirting removed during building renovation or demolition.
- Production rejects: Out-of-specification pipes that cannot be sold as prime product.
Sorting is critical. PVC must be separated from PE, PP, and other plastics because different polymers have incompatible processing temperatures and will not blend. Near-infrared (NIR) sorting technology is increasingly used in larger facilities for automated material identification.
Stage 2: Primary Shredding
Whole PVC pipes—which can be up to 6 meters long and 630mm in diameter—are fed into a single shaft shredder. The hydraulic ram compacts and pushes material into the cutting chamber, where the rotor blades reduce pipes to 40-80mm pieces. For pipes with metal inserts, a double shaft shredder with its slower speed and higher torque is more tolerant and prevents blade damage.
Stage 3: Secondary Crushing
The shredded PVC chips enter a heavy-duty crusher equipped with claw-type blades. Operating at approximately 500-600 RPM, the crusher reduces the 40-80mm chips to 6-12mm regrind. The screen mesh size is selected based on the downstream pulverizer feed requirements. A 10mm screen is commonly used as it balances throughput and feed quality.
At this stage, any remaining metal contaminants should be removed using magnetic separators or eddy current separators. Even small metal fragments can severely damage pulverizer blades.
Stage 4: Pulverizing
This is the heart of PVC powder production. The clean 6-12mm PVC regrind is fed into a turbo-type PVC pulverizer. Inside the grinding chamber, a high-speed rotor disc (3,000+ RPM) with tungsten-coated blades shears the regrind against a stationary disc. The intense friction generates significant heat, making the integrated water-cooling jacket essential—without it, PVC would thermally degrade, turning yellow or brown and losing mechanical properties.
The ground powder is carried by a blower-driven air stream into a cyclone separator, where coarse particles drop out and return to the grinding chamber. Fine particles proceed to a vibrating screen classifier that separates powder by mesh size. The pulse-jet dust collector captures airborne particles, ensuring a clean working environment and recovering valuable material.
Stage 5: Quality Control
For PVC powder to be reused in extrusion, it must meet specific quality parameters:
- Particle size distribution: Consistent within the specified mesh range (typically 20-80 mesh). Oversized particles cause surface defects; undersized particles (dust/fines) affect bulk density and feeding.
- Bulk density: Should be consistent with virgin powder to ensure uniform feeding in extrusion hoppers.
- Color: Should match the target specification. Thermal degradation during grinding produces yellowish discoloration, indicating insufficient cooling.
- Contamination: Free from metal particles, other plastics, and foreign matter.
Economic Benefits
A well-designed PVC recycling system with a quality pulverizer can recover 85-92% of input material as usable powder. With PVC compound costs ranging from $800-1,200/ton, a medium-scale operation processing 400 kg/h can recover approximately $250,000-400,000 worth of material annually, providing a return on equipment investment within 12-18 months.
