Understanding Your Pulverizer Options

Choosing the right plastic pulverizer is a decision that directly impacts your production efficiency, product quality, and operating costs. With multiple disc types, cooling methods, and power configurations available, understanding the key selection criteria is essential for making an informed investment.

1. Material Type Determines Disc Configuration

The most critical factor in pulverizer selection is the material you intend to process. Different plastics respond differently to the grinding mechanism:

PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride): PVC is heat-sensitive and requires a turbo-type disc mill with integrated water cooling. When PVC is ground, friction generates significant heat that can cause thermal degradation if not properly managed. Turbo mills with water-cooled jackets maintain material temperature below the degradation point. For PVC pipe, profile, and skirting recycling, a turbo-type pulverizer with 55-75 kW motor power capable of producing 10-80 mesh powder is the standard configuration.

PE / LLDPE / HDPE: Polyethylene materials, especially for rotational molding applications, require a disc-type mill. PE is softer than PVC and can become sticky at elevated temperatures. Disc mills with precision gap adjustment produce consistent 20-80 mesh powder. For heat-sensitive LLDPE, optional liquid nitrogen (LN2) cryogenic cooling can be integrated to maintain low grinding temperatures and prevent particle agglomeration.

WPC / SPC Composites: Wood-plastic and stone-plastic composites contain both thermoplastic and filler materials (wood flour, calcium carbonate). These require a heavy-duty turbo pulverizer with robust water cooling. The abrasive nature of fillers means that blade and disc material selection—specifically tungsten-carbide coated alloys—is critical for long service life.

2. Output Fineness Requirements

The required powder mesh size directly determines the pulverizer type and screen configuration:

  • 10-20 mesh (coarse powder): Suitable for PVC compounding and masterbatch pre-mixing. Achievable with standard turbo mills at higher throughput.
  • 30-60 mesh (medium powder): The sweet spot for rotational molding PE powder. Requires disc mills with precision gap control and efficient classification.
  • 60-80 mesh (fine powder): Required for WPC/SPC flooring production and high-quality coatings. Demands a well-tuned turbo mill with vibrating screen classification.
  • 80-100+ mesh (ultra-fine): For specialized applications. May require multiple grinding passes or cryogenic assistance.

3. Throughput Requirements and Motor Sizing

Motor power directly correlates with production capacity. As a general guideline:

  • 30-37 kW: 100-250 kg/h — suitable for small to medium operations, pilot production, or specialty materials.
  • 55 kW: 250-400 kg/h — the most common configuration for mid-scale PVC and PE powder production.
  • 75-90 kW: 400-550 kg/h — high-volume industrial production for pipe manufacturers and large recycling facilities.

Note that actual throughput varies significantly based on material hardness, feed size, and desired fineness. Always request a material test with your target specifications before finalizing your purchase.

4. Cooling System Selection

Cooling is non-negotiable for most plastic pulverizing applications:

  • Water Cooling: Standard for PVC, WPC, and most general applications. A water-jacketed grinding chamber circulates cooling water to dissipate frictional heat. Requires a chiller or cooling tower connection.
  • Cryogenic (LN2) Cooling: Used for extremely heat-sensitive materials like LLDPE, EVA, and certain engineering plastics. Liquid nitrogen is injected into the grinding chamber, keeping material temperature well below the glass transition point. Higher operating cost but essential for specific applications.

5. Dust Collection and Environmental Compliance

Modern pulverizers must meet environmental standards. The pulse-jet bag filter dust collection system captures fine particles, ensuring a clean working environment and compliance with air quality regulations. The number of filter bags (typically 6-24 depending on model) correlates with grinding capacity.
